  • Recent work, a beach house interior

    Hi,

I just finished this on Friday. I used Vray displacement for the woven cording on the couch body. I noticed in low light areas, there is some artifacting. I used 2d displacement at .35", tight bounds. I couldn't get 3d displacement to work as well.

Here is the displacement map, which I created in Photoshop based on Gijs' example with the wicker chair (thanks Gijs).

When I tried using the 3d displacement (with Gijs' settings and many variations), one direction of the pattern refused to show up.

I'd appreciate any advice on the displacement issue. This was rendered with IR map and Lightcache, QMC sampler for aa. Any other comments and suggestions are welcome too.

[ETA] I tried using Adaptive aa with 0,3 settings, but that didn't improve the displacement in low light areas.

Nice work Fran and thanks for sharing your settings.

I have the same problem with displacement in shade areas, Any idea to work around it ?

nice. actually i found that using wind plugin on photoshop for that (in the correct direction for the correct pieces) gives the cording more detail

        Hi Frances,
3d displacement works fine here (without artifacting), but only when unchecking view dependent. I would try that and see if it works. On the other hand, if you use approximate GI (like lightcache and irradiance map) you will most likely loose detail in areas that are only indirectly lit if the samples are larger than the displacement detail.

        Nice rendering BTW

            Nice image Frances,
You really need to crank up the IRmap settings to get the detail out of the displacement.

                  Thanks everyone.

Gijs, I've tried unchecking View Dependent. What settings do you usually use for the other options. I know you used 4 for amount and .02 for threshold. I can't look at the rollout right now to see what other options there are. When I get a chance, I'll render out my 3d attempt on a simple model and include the settings.

Olitech, yes. My main problem was trying to get the Contrast, Saturation, and Color Mapping settings tweaked to get the colors correct. Then there was adusting the GI, shadow and material settings trying to get rid of the noise. I followed a tip I saw from Gijs about using .75 for secondary bounce to give some depth, and I believe that made a big improvement (thanks again Gijs).

Chris, this job is in the can and the client was very pleased with it. But I'll keep experimenting and trying to get more detail

                      good work as usual.
you allways use close angles on your renderings( 40-50 mm lens).
How do you mange to convince your clients to exept those renderings.
