    It's close to the level adjustment you describe but not quite. To get the same adjustment out of curves you'd need a graph like the following:

    The disadvantage of the way you describe is that you lose all of the detail in your pure blacks and pure whites. Using the "S" curve method produces roughly similar results but keeps details in these areas since it's not clipping any of the values out.

      dlparisi, cheers for the explanation..Ill have to do some tests as i tend to use levels quite a bit, was never aware that I might be losing detail by using it though

        yep dlparisi is spot on. Exactly the reason I try to stay away from levels as much as possible. As you basically loss too much info for my liking.
        If you try to match my S curve ™ out come with levels you will loss black levels like under the building near the white column you will get mostly black. Where with the S curve ™ you keep the most of the colors and levels intact.

        Hence the wonderfull S curve ™
