  • MTV Europe Awards

Here are some renders we did for the MTV Europe Music Awards. It was our first project using Vray and I have to say it saved our skin on a few occasions. Being able to render a low resolution version for approvals and then use the saved irradiance maps for high res stills was a lifesaver.

Final renders were output between 4-6k. In all I think we did somewhere around 30 renders at full resolution in a 3 week span. They were later color corrected for print.

Really nice and clean. Great work !!

Can we see a piece of animation ? (i dont have MTV at home and i neither want to watch it )

What was the method of render used for the animation ? Did you use a static "precalculated" irradiance map ? (if IR was used)

Thanks for the comments everyone. We were only responsible for the print side of things so we didn't get to do any of the animation. The timeline for this stuff was pretty tight so animation was being done at the same time we were doing the print package. I modeled the logo and then handed it off so they could concentrate on getting all the bumpers done.

MTV had their own in house animators doing all the animation so they could get instant feedback from the director so I am not sure what methods they used for the animations; but I agree they looked pretty cool in motion. I know you can view the spots on youtube but I'll see if I can get quicktimes of them to post here.

Those are great. Can you enlighten us as to the neon materials and glow? That's the best neon I've seen so far.

Well majority of it is straight up Vray using the light material. The secondary glow or 'haze' around the neon tubing comes from simply compositing the same image on top of itself using overlay mode with some simple keying to get rid of the darker areas.

I'm in the midst of another deadline right now but once I get a few spare moments I'll post some before/after renders along with the .mat library and possibly an After Effects file so you can see how it was done.

nice stuff, I wondered who did this because......

I infact did the original 3d test image of the logos that where used on all the promotional material leading upto the event, its intresting seeing you images because a few of the details that where in the original image made it into these. If you intresting my version can be seen on my site, its nowhere near as nice as yours, I had less than 24 hours to do the illustration and mtv wanted it to be very clean and bright (so it could be easly read when small), I really like the rustic look of these though

                    great stuff though 10/10

mdi: yeah I'd love to see it. I think we had a week to come up with the final look and after going through a few revisions this is what they chose.

Here's the basic idea behind the neon. You can play around with the falloff curves to get hotter or more vibrant lighting.

                          http://www.intrinsia.net/transfers/Vray_neon.rar

I have also included a photoshop file that shows the basic comping method to get the glow.

note: the maxfile uses ColorCorrect plugin which can be found here:
