    Thats great!

Although, all small branches are missing.
    They could add more realism.

      Oh yes they are.....................

They are there, but the masking is not too brilliant, if I try to alter the masking layer (Photoshop) with levels or defringe the layer they disappear, should really re-render with sky background and re-composite in Photoshop.

Nice! The materials could use some variation though. You can try the attached script for each grouping of Proxies.

Instead of defringing have you tried using "remove black matt" or "remove white matt".

              Tried it all

Tried it all, unfortunately the twigs are so fine that all attempts do more harm than good, it is still a WIP so I will probably paint over an identical layer underneath the original in a similar colour to the bark, worked before.

              Thanx for the help.

Alternativly, you could render out at twice the size...try it with a small region first...there should be enough infomation then.

Edit: Why are you having to use an alpha anyway ? Is the sky not part of the max scene ? If not, why not just make it part of the max scene then you dont have to worry about compositing.

                  BG problems

True, but I have found that if I use a bitmap as a background the colours seem to 'bleed' thru the geometry and influence the colurs of the image, eg there would be a faint indication of the clouds in the leaves etc as though I had overlaid a 10% layer in Photoshop? Never cured it? Any thoughts?

You could just setup a plane behind everything and apply your texture to that. I would go for a vraylight material and then, in the vray properties, turn off shadows and gi. That way the background wont affect your scene more than being just a background..

Edit: I cant imagine why your background would be bleeding through the geometry..do you have a screenshot of that ?

it's if you have the enviroment set as screen if I recall right...
It's better to have environment mapped onto a dome if possible.
