  • Filling station - WIP

Here's a wee image I put together quite quickly for a client. It's fairly hideous design wise like most of the dreck architects fire at us. I thought I'd try a just rained look, architect hated it and wants the usual clinical image. Oh well! It's lacking detail in areas, but this is as much as I could put together in the time given.

Here's a render I sent by accident, straight from max, without the leaves too because I rendered the wrong frame and p-flow started on frame 2.

Architect wants no water or leaves and a BP type branding.

Very nice, but I agree with the water - it adds more realism, but it undermines the promotional character of the image.

Good on you for trying the rain I say. Shame the architect didn't like it.
I think your cars look a little too dull however - adding some better car paint shaders would really make a difference - they don't appear to be reflecting any kind of sky - is it just a black envrionment in Max? Try putting a vray sky in there...

Maybe it would be better if it was more of a uniform wetness over the pavement, instead of the individual puddles?

          Hey all,

Actually did use a vray sky - you're right though, the shaders aren't great and the glass looks a tad black. I hadn't actually noticed that! I should fix the car glass first of all.

I'm not sure if he'd like any kind of wetness, I went safe and just created a regular tarmac material.

I will get puddles in to one of my image at some point! I think a night time wet puddley version would be cool. Would never be able to do it for a client, it's the kind of thing i'd have to do myself.

I think it could benefit from LWF. The shadow areas are a little un-naturally dark.

The environment is great; materials on the building and cars need a little work. The yellow needs some shiny reflection to it.

The water adds realism but at the end of the day clients don't want realism, they want the dream.

Blur the wheels on the Renault a little otherwise it looks like it's parked in an odd spot.

Great job though if you were under time pressure. My 2 cents.

                Good WIP
If this is new construction, I'd loose the puddles. Puddles like that mean bad grading and/or drainage.
                I like the camera/view
                Brick looks good
                Close-up vegetation looks good
                Sky looks good
The filler hoses look stiff and too far out
Curb on right side of image needs material work
The trees in the BG look a bit too similar
Cars look good, but I would change colors of the duplicate cars

Thanks for all your comments and tips. Client is still getting back to me, but I've taken on board what I've read here too!

                  Cheers,

                  Judderman.
