  • Displacement fun

    Just trying to solve someone's problem on cgarchitect and came up with this;

    Created entirely by displacement, no modelling involved. I thought it looked quite funky!

      I wrote a little bit about it in my blog; http://macviz.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05...placement.html

      It really is a very simple technique once you get your head around it; two identical planes with displacement, one of them with its normals flipped so that it displaces in the opposite direction. You can use an opacity map, or the "water level" control in the Vraydisplacement modifier to clip out the hole. I'd love to see what other people could come up with using this method... it seems to me you'd be able to easily create things like fences and railings just from a simple image.

                My example, certainly. But the example/problem that I was trying to solve for someone wasn't going to be reliant on a tile-able texture/geometry.

                      looks really clean!

                      i've used this technique in the past for creating mashrabiya (intricately carved wooden) screens on a project. It works really well if you need to try out several different patterns and don't have the time to model them.
