  • Philco PC design : new renders with 2.0

I am really loving the improved speed, quality, and new features with V-Ray for Rhino 2.0. The three renders here required no Photoshop tweaking whatsoever, except for one replacement background. Amazing!

The reason I re-rendered this project is that the work is going to be featured in a new book coming out later this year. All of the images were too small, so I had to re-render them at 5,000 pixels wide for the publisher's requirements. The proposed book cover is shown below.

I was having trouble making the chrome look good, especially on the edges where it would easily disappear in the bright lighting. Here is my Killer Chrome Tip:

      1. Adjust your chrome material to look good.
      2. Make a new toon material with the chrome as a 'sub-material' (I name it 'chrome-TOON' to keep it clear)
      3. Adjust the toon material outline to be 1 to 1.5 pixels / dark gray / 80-90% opacity.
      4. Now you will get a nice subtle outline that looks great and will keep outer edges from disappearing.

Look at chrome edges in the renders closely and you can see the sweet difference. Hope it helps your projects ...
