I'm always surprised at the architectural differences between different countries. I'm pretty sure something like this wouldn't stand a chance in planning over here in the UK. I'm interested: how long does it take you to model something like this?
Roof tiles look a bit nasty, though I appreciate this is early. Have you tried Batzal Roof Designer? I haven't used it for a while, but it seemed quite good from what I can remember.Kind Regards,

I have Batzal Roof Designer, but I do not think I have used it in years. I usually use DigitalXModels.com's Displacement Roof Surfaces script, which is what I used on this one. This model took two days, but it is very symmetrical, so I only had to model half of it. Why wouldn't this work in the U.K.?
I was originally told that this architect does not just let anybody do his renderings, and has an in-house illustrator, but he is busy; I needed to reach his quality of photo-realism. So, I got the cad files, modeled it up, and then asked for colors and materials. I waited several days for his in-house illustrator to email me his illustration that he completed months early. The design changed, so I had to model it again, but the colors have stayed the same. When he did email it, I was a little apprehensive to open the email, I was worried that it is something that I could not compete with. After all, this is a boutique architect who designs for the rich and famous. When I double click the file, I had to gasp for air.... it was hideous!!!!
i don't want to make fun of other peoples work, but come on!Bobby Parker

It looks like something from Disneyland! I will take a look at the script you mentioned. To be honest, we rarely do tiled roofs. Batzal was quite nice, but licensing was always a pain, and it seemed a little clunky and 'forgotten about'.
My point about planning is really about the design: 'its all over the shop' in my opinion. Proportions of roof to window, odd 'neo-classical' elements, clashing styles. Honestly...its hideous. But then, a lot of stuff in the UK is also hideous!
Much of what architectural visualisation is what we like to call 'turd-polishing'. Some turds are harder to make sparkleKind Regards,

Personally, I don't get "design"; it seems to be very subjective. I am getting good and seeing good composition in an image, so I can see how someone can see good design in a structure, but I haven't studied that. Someone likes his stuff, because he seems to have a lot of high end client.Bobby Parker

I wish Google would build into "Google Images" a design algorithm. It would be nice to drag-n-drop a photo and it'll return a design grade. With my renderings I always crunch the colors so I only see lights and darks. This way, I can see if I have a good balance. I also zoom way out and look at my renderings on a stamp size preview. This lets me see basic shapes better. Mirroring my rendering back and forth also tricks my brain into seeing the rendering for balance. Someone should write all this kind of stuff into an algorithm.Bobby Parker

What I have learned in life though is that the more money a person has, the less taste (in cars, houses, number plates, fashion) a person has. Does taste = design?Kind Regards,

a lot houses in US look like Disneyland and the fact that some elements are fake...fake stone, fake windows, fake chimneys, fake shutters, etc
brick being used only in one face like a sticker and turning the corner with fake wood siding in vinyl....design wise in this case using american way to say it would be "contemporary neo-classical revival"show me the money!!

this is high end single family home architecture - http://www.archdaily.com/category/houses/ (also, that page is the be all-end all bible for material/lighting/composition references and I regularly check back to save photos)
the pinkish lighting on the early test you did is great. the stone looks a little bland though - the dirt is making the contrast between the light and dark look cartoony. maybe get some more varied texture into the main light parts.Last edited by Neilg; 11-07-2014, 11:17 AM.

I don't think I have seen full stone or brick, in new construction, in a decade. After you grout, you really can't tell, so it's a good place to save some money.Bobby Parker

This last one looks much better. That fountain also looks much better with the top part removed. It looked like you just switched the thing on and the water didn't get a chance to fall down yet. Something strange happening to the ridge tile at that double kink towards the bottom. Seems like parts got cut out from it. The hedges, grass and plants looks very nice.
Just the sharp shadow the edge of the roof makes on the far right, makes it look like those trees were added in post (the trees on the far left look awesome). Could be just the angle of the sun.
That slight hazy glow on the far left looks nice. Is that PS or VRay Lens Effects?
I like the overall look and feel of this one. Well done!Kind Regards,
Morne
