    hi alk heres little example its very easy but it depends on the mesh topology of the objets so never or not always you made it in the same way...

                great job zuliban! your a modelling master!

                alkonst: just in case its not clear, he beveled a vertex. Which is a great way to do it, except like zuliban said, it depends on the topology, since the newly created edges cant exceed the closest edges or it gets fooked up. If you try it on a mesh that is too dense, youll run into issues.
