some of the best grading luts i have found are these and used directly in photoshop, saves a tone of time in grading, i forgot to say, they have a before and after image, so usually its nice to try add a color balance under the lut and get it similar to their before image then the lut more or less looks like their after image, really powerful

Me personally, I don't fancy luts so much. They always seem nice but as you said, you need to have the same base material to have the same result. I also find it cumbersome to further adjust the image after applying the lut and am faster doing the grade from scratch, especially if there is a very certain look I'm after.
