often i find myself needing to sculpt a mesh for a specific view or scene (landscapes etc) , and obviously need a denser mesh in the foreground.
i currently use a labour intensive method of creating a plane, selecting with the circle marquee a large area, applying mesh smooth on a single iteration to the selection. then making a smaller selection closer to camera, and repeating, with a single subdivision. i keep doing this on sequentially smaller selections until i arrive in the foreground.
it seems to me the kind of thig that must exist as a plugin/script or tool already in max.
i did see that opensubdiv does adaptive subdivision based on view distance in the viewport, but its just a preview, and collapsing the mesh removes the effect.
