        I missed the plot.
It felt like a videogame: prequel (boring), approach, first warmup fight, miniboss, second big fight, first boss confrontation, third fight, betrayal!, fourth fight, surprise!, final boss encounter, almost a win, final slaughter.
And the massive twist to the *plot*.
They don't win, the next ones will.

Add to that some seriously imperialistic undertones ( i heard bushisms in too many sentences, myself, but i do have bias), and a heavy heavy dose of testosterone and shiny muscles and blood, and you have the perfect box office hit.
In europe it's also heavily accused of racism, and with some grain of truth to it (refer to the imperialistic undertones above).
An hour and a half of my life wasted.

"The good shepherd" on the other hand, is stunning, really stunning a spy movie.

Good sheperd was awesome. I followed it up with a little Spy Game. Only if I had time to watch a little Sneakers....But Jerimiah Johnson is on.....YOu can't get enough of that.

The battle scenes are pretty sweet.. no doubt about that.. the slow mo stuff is just wicked
But in terms of the "movie" and what they call a plot.. well there certainly has been better.

never think of bearing in mind the point of view the story is told from?

The soldier who was sent home for his gift is telling it, his gift happens to be telling stories and creating propaganda. There was a 5 minute conversation about this, probably one of the biggest plot points in the whole film. The entire film is his story, told on the battlefield. This is why the persian king dwarfs everyone else, why everything is so over the top and exagerated, why the other army is a literal sea of people - we have no idea if any of that really happened, its just one mans tale to get people angry.

I thought it was incredible. Kind of dissapointing to see so many people expecting a film which will massage their intelect who then miss the point entirely though.

hmm, I know what you are saying cubicleganster, but maybe having it based on Frank Millers graphic novel wasnt the way to go- but then again that was pretty much the whole point.
I dont know, certainly not a 'Troy/Holywood' like style either. I would like to see Pete Jackson would have done with 'Gates of Fire' i.e. not a comic version. What peed me off were the corney lines, the Marines like war cry - How annoying was that, aghhh, the blood squirt got old.
Anyways on lighter note I bet out hunchback buddy thought all his X'mases came at once when he was in the King's Tent! Interesting Pad you got there Xerxes!

Personal taste then, it was never dressed up to be a proper war film or a drama - its a stylish romp about slaughtering people. You cant really expect much more from it.

I hate out of place corny lines and over the top effects, but I belive they all had their place - they were there to remind you it wasnt a serious film.

I thought the movie was worth watching. While I didnt expect much from it, it was better then I thought. But, there are some things I noticed in it also:

The scene with a mother and her son in the weat field and returning warrior, really reminded me of the same scene in gladiator, when he died. Scene on the battlefield where "faromier" leads the whole spartan army against the persians really reminded me of the ending from brave heart. Not to mention all the freaks and monsters which are completely lord of the rings style...
I think they could have done a better movie, with such high budged.

                      Worth watching.

I found this movie an awesome experience and a must-see for everyone even slightly interested in VFX, composition, 3D and superb filmmaking. I bet that would be all of us
Plot? Go see any other movies, there are plenty of them out there to fill the gap. Romance comedies have a plot, trial, cops, social, generational movies have a plot. This movie is spectacular. None of the other will offer u that. Dont ask for things this movie MUST not give u. Take it as it is and u will enjoy the show. Gladiator and Braveheart are for kids. This is a bunch of eyecandy stuff all compiled together in a restless sequence and although i dont really like too much blood all around, i couldnt do anything else than staring at this little rounded zero-gravity blood drops...and asking for more!
Did I say i liked this movie?

Indeed, some of the most beautiful blood rendering ever on screen.
It's just that after i saw the first of it, i was dead bored at the thought of how much more there would be...
I loved the grade, of course, and Xerses, i agree with rivoli entirely on the character, possibly the best in the movie.
I also liked a lot the scene of the Oracle, in its entirety, from the climb to its end.

But it sums up to around 10 minutes out of an hour and a half.
                          Not a good average...

Panthon pretty much summed up my feelings about it too. I quite enjoyed it. I honestly walked away saying there wasn't anything in there I would have wanted different.
