I've never had a renderfarm before, and I'm planning on investing on a dedicated one, a small one actually, maybe just around 5-10 rendernodes for a start.
There's a couple of things I'd like to know before I start to empty my pockets:
1. What's the average lifetime of a rendernode before you have to upgrade/buy a newer ones? 6 months? 1 year? 2 years?
2. When it's time to upgrade, do you usually just add newer machines to your current renderfarm (more machines), or do you replace the old ones?
3. I've been comparing the specs on RenderBoxx. And I see that Dual Xeon E5320 (1.86ghz) 4gb RAM is roughly the same price with Dual Opteron 2218 (2.4ghz) 4gb RAM. Can anyone recommend which one best suited for vray render? Why is xeon RAM a lot more expensive than opteron?
