My machine is running XP64. It has 8GB RAM and a FireGL graphics card with 1GB memory on it. We are using Max2009 x64 and Vray 1.5.
I'm trying to understand what is happening with memory useage in my particular scene. It isn't overly complicated - just a domestic exterior scene with a couple of ForestPro objects and a couple of gwIvy objects. Quite a few textures, but nothing particularly massive or complex.
I am working on refining the gwIvy object I have created, but quite often, I get a system crash when selecting, modifying or shading the view. I have the task manager up and running so I can see how much memory max is using.
When I load the scene into a fresh session of max, most of my objects are hidden, and the view is wireframe only. Max session is using 722MB memory.
I then isolate one of the ivy objects, still showing the view in wireframe. Still using 722MB memory.
I then choose shaded view, and the memory usage climbs massively. My PC takes around 30-40 seconds to actually shade the view. Memory usage is now at 3.1GB!!!
Why has the memory jumped so much? The ivy object in the viewport only has 300k faces which isn't too high really. In choosing shaded view, what is happening? Are all of the textures in the scene being loaded into memory, even though they are mostly hidden?
What is my graphics card memory actually doing in all of this?
Some pointers might help me work out why my machine is crashing quite so much.
