hair changing color effects ...

Guys does anyone can give a tip how to create this kind of effect of yellow sliding over the hair (I can only use standard max hair and fur and after effects).
I tried using gradient ramp for hair root and tip but somehow can;t see color changes, plus I would prefer the effect to look like on video (not whole hair at first are affected), orange slides on some hairs. Maybe somehow it can be done easy in AE ?
