Has anybody calculated the cost of an average still, as far as electricity? Since I started running my new machine my electric bill has almost doubled. I know it's the cost of doing business, but double?

I doubt whether it's the Xeon causing this.

Funny. Actually, we don't have neighbors . It might be something else, but that's the only thing that has changed, other than rendering 24/7.

                Maybe try this, http://www.belkin.com/conserve/insight/

I got this when I setup my x5 i7 farm - but I'm not sure if it's still accurate. I had the whole farm on a power strip into one outlet with this monitor attached.

I probably need to update the latest cost for electricity, but from when I originally set it, the price has fluctuated $20-80 for a month, on top of the rest of the apartment's electricity. Not sure how accurate it is.

We're about to move, so I'll be interested to see if our bill goes down. We might have had a bum fridge or a/c unit that was sucking electricity. Or get smarter with how I manage the farm.

I highly doubt its the xeon. When I just have my main xeon running my bill is about $100 per month. When I have the entire farm (16 xeons) running my bill is about $250 a month. Now when they are running they are rendering so they eat power.

Xeon like i7 have c states so it throttles down when idle and does not consume as much. But perhaps it consumes more since there is two actual cpus in the board, more ram sticks and more per cpu cores then an average i7.

I think I'll pick up the Belkin device to check what is draining power. Heck, it could be a space heater I just bought for my office and use daily.

Yeah man we have a few of those - most inefficient and power hungry beats ever!

A single space heater doubled my electricity bills, and i didnt work from home. they use an astonishing amount of electricity.

+1 for the heater. The boiler died in our studio a couple of years ago so we had to run a couple of electric heaters for about 10 days. It doubled our electricity bill for that entire month.

That's probably it. Such a small heater, but I'll do some testing.
