  • Where are those free soft boxes again that was posted a while back?

    Hi all

A while back somebody posted a bunch of softboxes, I think they were HDRI, to be used with VRay Plane Lights. I can't seem to find that post now...

Does anybody still have that link or care to share it again?
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

      Hey Morné

I think I remember the post as well, I may have them somewhere. No promises but I'll take a look.
There are also the lightsmith ones on http://www.hdrlabs.com/sibl/archive.html

That's what I ended up using as a quick test

Thanks Gavin, the Lightsmith ones is a nice find and will give me a good start in the right direction.

For those of you interested, I also found these studio hdri's that may come in handy at some point:

          Hey Morne

I know they aren't free, but Serge Aleynikov's set is pretty cheep and they look great.

Light Studio never seemed very intuitive to me. I like the Serge Aleynikov's set of lights, but am wondering how they're used (PDF link is broken). Maybe very obvious that you import them into the scene? Is it a whole separate lighting system, independent of Vray lights?

They're only a collection of images, he shot hdri's of lots of different types of real lights, so you load them as textures into vray lights. They'll give you loads of nice colour variation in your light and really pretty reflections on the surface of anything in your scene since you're not using a simple flat colour anymore, at the expense of slightly longer render times. If you're doing some nice product shots or car renders they'll make it look far more realistic if only for making the reflections and highlights a bit more organic and soft.

Ahh. Thanks John. Yes, that makes perfect sense now to load them as textures. I obviously wasn't thinking along those lines. As a commercial photographer by trade, this seems really exciting to me to be able to mimic some nice effects into the product renders. Very good find indeed. I also have Light Studio 4, but haven't played with it all that much. It seems really kind of confusing to me how it all works. At least there's some good tutorials out there.
