  • deforming alembic cache

any of you big brains out there know if there is a ways (in 3dsmax) to import an alembic cache (or proxy) and clone it over a surface, and have the clones conformed to the surface?

    its for a desert.

ive got my "live action" area with a proper sand sim going on, and i was planning to export a larger sheet of sand as a single alembic frame, and tile that over the rest of the landscape to keep it looking equivalent to the simulated area.

the area is basically flat, but obviously there has to be some variation!

to do that variation would require deforming the tiled caches to fit a non-flat surface.

basically what vraypattern does with normal geometry, but i dont imagine for a millisecond it would accept an alembic or proxy as its input.

i cannot set a proxy to "show full mesh" and deform that, as it does not work with particles

i could of course do this with pflow in max, but a) its never going to look the same and b) vray particle shader only works with proxy or alembic particles.
