  • Remove highlight burn in post?

    Hi all

With linear EXR's, how do you remove the highlight burn in post without making the image look flat? Bringing the burns down for seem to always also loose light that is already below 1.0 and make thinhgs look pale washed out
    Kind Regards,
    Morne

depends on what software you use, typically with a float image you can isolate a range for example darks, midtones, highlites and just drop that part of the range down (not substantially) but should be enough.

With photoshop I'm not sure how to isolate only the highlights in a 32bit image. Whatever I do, seems to affect the entire range

I use camera raw and lower highlights. There does seem to be a bug, so you have to convert to 16bit first.

going down to 16 prevents other things from working so I want to try and keep 32bit
          Kind Regards,

Yes I've been using the free version, but its limited to 4K. I'm busy with a stereo VR so stuck with photoshop. Wonder if Affinity can do 32bit https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/windows/

The problem is that flattens my layers and it doesnt have any settings, just on or off. I need something non destructive

Hi. Photoshop it´s not the best to work on 32bpc but you can try to do it several ways. I have a tutorial but it´s in Spanish: https://goo.gl/rEcTbb (first part it´s in AE)

                      1. Lower exposure until burned values aren´t and lower gamma correction to increase brighness but you will need to add some LUT or another type of contrast later. PS 32bpc tools are really bad xD
                      2. Merge 2 different exposures using a painted/soft mask.
                      3. Duplicate the project and use the HDR toning to compress dynamic range and paste over the 32bpc (use a painted mask again). You can use smart objects to keep the original 32bpc intact.
                      4. Use a plugin like ArionFX

But to be honest, if you really want to work on 32bpc Photoshopo it´s not the software, try Fusion/Nuke/Natron.

Which Node in Natron should I be looking at for this?

Select all layers > convert to smart object > apply camera raw filter > play with the options.

The result of the Camera Raw Filter is always clamped so you can but don't need to continue working in 32-bit.
You can convert your layer to a smart object again > change document bit depth to 8/16 bits per channel.
The smart object ensures that the camera raw filter is still applied in 32-bit mode.

                            Everything non-destructive.

                              Forget Photoshop

Fusion Free is GREAT for up to 4K (beyond 4K if you have the paid version)

                              But,
