I am in Vray 3.5.04 and noticed that the fur is not rendering with consistent density when closing and opening Max. I had things right and re-opened max and the fur was much more dense all the sudden. Has anyone else experienced this? Well, I figured out what my issue was.
I am using a Dynamic FBX from Maya to Max. In Maya I had hit "3" on the geometry as a smooth preview, which doesn't change visible polygons, but will export them. So I had exported without setting it back to "1". So essentially my fur was suddenly refreshing with 4x density even though the geometry looked about the same.
Just FYI. Watch your smoothing settings when using Dynamic FBX files between Maya and Max.
