  • 1:1 self illumination exposure level (and white balance) for back-plate projects

I'm rendering out a backplate and then projecting it back on to a plane in the same scene. Is there a mathematically 'correct' way of choosing the self illumination level on the projection material?

Ideally I want to use the same camera and exposure settings in my projection scene in order to match the lighting on the backplate and the remaining 3D elements. I can't get my head around how to balance the self illumination multiplier up against the exposure in the projection scene.

Also come to think of it, my white balance will be 'burned in' to the projection texture so presumably I need to render the backplate without white balance to avoid giving a double white balance!?
