  • Volume Grid Render of parented FumeFX Sim

Hello, I'm essentially animating an astronaut's space jetpack that emits little puffs of gas to help propel them through a zero G environment. In order to prevent an enormous simulation area in FumeFX, I made my simulation box and then parented it to the jetpack. I hit 'simulate' and everything looked great.

I was looking forward to exporting the simulation as a VDB sequence so I could import it, shade it and render it using V-ray via a Vray Volume Grid. It imports just fine, but spatially, things seem to be way off. The orientation of the Volume Grid seems to be way off, and even when I try to align it to the original simulation, its coordinate system seems to be totally different than the original simulation. Weirdly, even when I parent it to the jetpack, it won't even move along the trajectory of the jetpack. It just seems to have a mind of its own.

So my first question is this: VrayVolumeGrid seems to change the size of the display box each frame, depending on how much space the information within the VDB takes up. Is there a way to disable the auto-sizing box? It's difficult to orient the box properly when it's constantly changing sizes.

My second question: Is there any documentation on parenting a volume grid to something else? Or perhaps any other suggestions on why my volume grid (no keyframes at all) isn't following the same trajectory as the parent it's linked to?

Thanks for any insights you might have!
