Upscaling

Has anybody been able to successfully render 1/2 resolutions and upscale them in something like Topaz? I have about 60 images to render in three weeks and hope for a shortcut. I have tried, and I am underwhelmed. I am thinking rendering 1920X1080 and upscaling - any settings to be aware of?


I remember all kinds of tricks I used back in the day to render scenes my computer couldn't handle. I look back now and am amazed I pulled it off. I am hoping to learn some new tricks using AI. I hope one of you says yes. I do it all the time and would never waste time rendering full resolution again—please!

Yes, you can choose 1x2 or 1x4 to get 200% or 400% enlarged images, but please choose SDXL or Flux models, topaz ones are lacking in my opinion. For online upscaler, you can try kreaai.

But using AI means a lot of PS compositing work is required.

If you can point me to a good upscaling method (maybe using comfyUI) that doesn't change anything like Topaz I'd be happy to try but I tried a lot of SDXL, Flux upscaling and all of them were severly lacking.

For regular upscaling I like to use Topaz it's the best thing I found out there. I had a very tight deadline once (most of the time actually, but this time I had only 1 night to render 15 images on 1 TR 3990x), so I rendered at 2000px and upscaled to 5000px. Granted it's not as good as rendering on 5K immediately but for that purpose it did the job just fine.

For creative upscaling I use Magnific, also haven't found a better one out there either.

Edit: There's also the AI upscaler inside V-Ray (denoiser element > Nvidia > AI upscale), that renders at half the resolution and then scales up. But I find Topaz a little bit better.

Good to try a number of methods or if all the images are similar you could train something CooyCat in Nuke to upscale for you by showing it a few low res and the ground truth high res renders as training.

Does topaz have a creative model now? I'm still on an older version but it haven't seen much improvement since then anyway.

Ok, if you could post a little crop of a before and after, would be nice. I still have magnific untill october, but rather not pay as I'm not using all of my credits at all every month.

I'm not going to bother to try uploading anything because this forum is still f**ked and gives errors when I try anything other than a text reply.

The results aren't as 'good' as magnific IMO and you have to use cloud for the generative stuff which costs credits. There are fewer levers to play with and I'm more comfortable with magnific's foibles as they are. I do like in Gigapixel that you get a little preview window of a specified area but it's still fairly slow.
The generative model using cloud computing:
5k image without upscaling is 6 credits.
5k image with 2x upscaling is 22 credits.

Credit costs are anywhere from $0.25 to $0.66 depending on how big your purchase is.

I'll stick with magnific.
