  • Question about image-mapped Vray lights

    Hi all -
I've been playing around with this for a while now, but cannot quite get my head around what is actually happening: When you use a Vray light as a plane with an HDRI image in the slot how do you best control the light brightness/intensity? The HDRI output is one way and the light multipier is another - are these functionally equivalent? It seems that they are, but the light quality does seem to vary a bit - I just can't quite put my finger on how.

What I'd really like out of this is to try and get a bit better control over the lighting brightness separate from the brightness of the "softbox" reflection so I can keep some detail in the reflection of the vray light, but not sure if this is really possible this way. Do I need to go back to using image mapped planes in combination with regular max lights? So far that seems to be the only way that works to get a nice graduated highlight but not have the image be too dark/dim overall.

Any help/tips would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    b
