  • Rendering in Layers & Passes (not GI)

Due to time constraints, I'm not using GI... but I'm still new to rendering in layers.

This is what I'm doing thus far....

I have a live action character which is being placed on a computer generated plane. There are objects flying over the plane which will cast shadows downward.

Both the objects and the plane have some reflectivity.

    My procedure is this:

    1) Render the plane only (no reflections)
    2) Render the flying objects (no reflections) with the plane as a matte with alpha -1 (some trees block the flying objects at certain points). This results in the flying objects being rendered in full with shadows on the plane.
    3) Render the reflections with both the plane and the flyers as mattes -- alpha -1.

#1 is the base layer in AfterFX, with #2 being added a normal composite and #3 as a screen composite

The last layer is the video of the character.

--Am I on the right track. I have just started the compositing process, so I'm not sure how everything is going to look.

If anyone has tips or whatnot please enlighten me.
Working...
