  • displacement problem....going the wrong way

Hi All, iv been going mad over this for the last hour, im sure theres a very easy way to get the effect that I want, but I just dont know what it is..

This is part of a trainer that iv been asked to do, and what Im doing is adding displacement to create the small holes at the front of the trainer....now my problem is that no matter what I do (iv changed and alltered everything I can think of) the holes are protuding the wrong way...iv tryed playing with the shift and amount in both positive and nagative values, Iv changed the displacement map loads of times, grays/black/whites, and inverted etc

see image and maybe dl the file to see if you can fix it

btw, i changed the dots to black, this also seemed to make little difference.

the map has to be black and white, white being the dots.
Apply a displacement mod, assign the map, leave everything to the defaults, but change the amount to a negative value.
The error you see is the inside faces popping out
Delete them, or separate them from the top part.

well...pretty easy. Your leather has thickness. so if you displace to the inside, the inner side will displace to the outside :P i fixed it by making displace -0.5 and shift 0.25 (to compensate for the 50% grey background. Then i added a uvw unwrap modifier and moved the inner vertices' uvw coordinates to 1,1,1 so they wont grab any map they shouldnt.

      Here's the updated file:

And here's how it looks now :
