I had this problem happen on a variety of machines so I don't think it is specific to anything but max and vray but if I start a render and at the same time max decides its time to auto save, the render starts but never progresses. I have to force quit max to get out of the situation.
Of course the simplest solution would be to shut off auto save but I find it comes in handy sometimes and would rather not do that unless I had to.
