Bump map issue

Just wondering if this ever got resolved? I'm having the exact same issue and it's driving me insane - spent all day trying to fix it on one sofa

Changing the environment variable to get back to the old behavior fixed it for me. But then after updating to 3.40.2 I forgot to set it back and there it's been again.
It happend on GGX to me.

btw the geometry is an imported STEP - BODY OBJECT
but i have to say i am gettign this elsewhere no matter what geometry

i am usign GTR/GGX set to 2.0, soften at 0
glossiness set to 0.6, reflection mid grey
fresnel at default
bump map is bercon noise with size set to 0.02 world mode (csene is in CM)
bump map value is 35

I guess the bump map adds shadowy detail to the areas in light, but cant add light detail to the areas that were originally shadowed and that where this comes from?
