I have been having crashes as well with lens effects enabled. If I stop the render early, I get a soft crash (a window pops up saying blender not responding. Blender stays open and I can save my work and restart.) No problems if I let the render finish.

Evenly I was getting the same soft crash described above.
I noticed that if I write anything like "\" in the "Image Path" and "Obstacle Path" (even if the option is disabled) the issue is gone.
Could you test it out if this works for you?
