  • Idea for Deep "Lite"

One scenario that comes up often for us, is rendering something like a smoke element where we want to place a shot element inside of it. Think of a person that has been greenscreen keyed or rotoed, with a cloud of dust surrounding them.

Currently we have 3 options to do this:

1: Render the volume twice, clipping the front in one render and the back in the next. This is difficult and cumbersome to set up.
2: Project the matte onto a card inside the volume. This works well, but forbids any adjustment to the matte, and limits the amount of manipulation that can be applied to the volume in comp without breaking the edges.
3: Render Deep. This works technically perfectly with the disadvantage of having stupendously giant frames.

I would propose a new deep rendering mode where I could nominate a plane gizmo and the deep image would only save a sample in front and behind the plane.
it would work with existing tools without having enormous files.

I am interested to hear others comments and thoughts on this topic.
