  • Nested glass surfaces rendering progressively darker

This is a common one -- I have three nested glass surfaces (Russian doll like). The innermost one has some color, which when rendered separately I have looking the way I want. However, when it's rendered with the outer glass surfaces around it, it's much too dark. All the other surfaces are completely transparent colorless glass with glossiness and reflectivity set to 1 with an IOR of 1.5. There is some thickness to each in order to get the correct refractions. I have tried bumping up my trace depth on both reflections and refractions but no matter what I do this innermost surface is rendering much darker than it does when the outer surfaces are hidden.

Racking my brains to think what I might be overlooking -- have tried turning off "Affects Shadows" but that doesn't seem to be it either. Due to the nature of the object, comping isn't really an option as I need all the refractions rendered in 3D. Anyone got any suggestions? This seems to be an energy loss....
