  • Tips+Tricks for the transition to an USD workflow for Maya, V-Ray, Houdini and Unreal?

    Nice evening,

after completing the transition to the ACES workflow, we want to check out if the time is right for going the USD route to finally make the dream come true: Editing and using the same 3D assets / scenes in Maya, Houdini and Unreal with out loosing all the shader, lighting, camera, animation etc. information. Guess the paradise is not totally finished yet, but perhaps it is usable already.

So if anyone has some experiences with the transition to USD, some helpful tutorials or links, please share them.

    Here are some beginners questions:

    1. Can the standard V-Ray materials and lights be exported by USD and used in Houdini or Unreal? Do we need V-Ray for Houdini and Unreal to get that working?

    2. There is no Hydra delegate for V-Ray for Maya at the moment, right?

    3. Has anyone experiences with importing USD file from Maya/V-Ray into Unreal? What can we expect to come through?

    4. Is the MaterialX project the missing module for the paradise? Does V-Ray for Maya support MaterialX? Where can I find more info? It seems that Unreal doesn't support it yet.

Thanks in advanced for your input.
    Lars
