  • vrayBitmap loader in maya (wish list)

    Hello!

I'd like to raise a request for this feature. We really could use a vrayBitmap loader in maya to avoid using maya's derelict file node. There are few reasons why vrayBitmap would be much better:

    - We run into a major limitation with maya when we try to load textures larger then 30,000 pixels (30kx30k), simply loading that kind of size texture causes maya to crash (nothing to do with vray).

    - I think some of the mapping of the maya 2d placement node are not that great, we could use better mapping controls especially relying on the U and V rotation coordinates.

    - It would be awesome if vray bitmap could wrap into it self a triplanar option that we don't have to use a separate node for it, as well as color correction option.

    - It would be great if vrayBitmap could use automatic UDIM option to autodetect which udim style is used in the texture file name. At present if we load file node for each of the substance exported texture sets, we have to manually set udim option by hand. Additionally the way maya's udim feature works it essentially has to check for each udim sequence all the udims before it set set that value. After having many udim file nodes opening hypershade takes for ever. If we manually type <UDIM> in the file name, it works but its a manual work I wish we didn't have to do.

    - This other idea we had would be a great one: if we could load one vrayBitmap instead of many (one per texture sequence). The idea would be to declare the texture name in a separate node, much like vrayUserScalar (could be vrayUserString) so the graph would be - vrayBitmap (with texture path like C:\temp\textures\asset_<textureName>.####.exr) then vrayBitmap node would connect to a vrayUserString node which would contain textureName = diffuseColor. We can have as many of these nodes as we would texture sets. Then we would connect those to the shader channels. The great thing about this, is if we have to update texture path, change texture version or simply load textures initially it takes the work down from loading 5-7 textures sets to 1.

Thanks and looking forward to it!
