  • Mentalray mia_material_x_passes to Vray Shader conversion

    Hi,

We are working on a reeboot of a show we worked on a couple of years ago.
Back then everything was 2015 SP5 with mentayray.
The good thing is we still have access to Maya 2015 with mentalray AND Vray Next for Maya update 1.1

we also have a script to convert mia_material_x_passes but it is very basic and doesn´t cover refraction and reflection properly.

I can get pretty close results manually (i disable color management for my tests)
I created some Mia Materials from the presets in 2015 and tried to apply the matching parameters to the vray shader in maya 2022

Some features, especially glossiness behave odd when comparing vray with mental ray.
It´s fine for 1 and 0 but inbetween it drifts off. I guess the mapping is not linear?

I don´t expect a 100% match with an automated conversion but it would be great to get close enough to only adjust some of the parameters manually.

has anyone experience doing this on a large scale (hundreds of assets)
what would be a proper way of mapping mia_material_x_passes1.refl_gloss over to VRayMtl24.reflectionGlossiness (and refraction)

    any help appreciated!
