Wrapper mtl and material select?

Does the wrapper mtl work with the material select render element? I am trying to get the shadows of only my ground into a render element without using render layers or compositing. Another way would be to be able to tell the shadow element to only render the shadows of a specific object. Not sure if this is possible.
