What size mesh or scene have you seen as a limit to GPU rendering with Vray for Maya?

  • What size mesh or scene have you seen as a limit to GPU rendering with Vray for Maya?

So I have another thread that I posted where I'm trying to debug an issue with GPU rendering a scene. My scene changes complexity over the 160 frames I'm rendering as when things go out of view I actually disable the geometry. (visibility = off) . My scene overall, IMHO, is just not that big. It is some medical equipment and in the total scene there is just under 500K faces. I don't think that is a particularly large scene complexity wise but it appears to be blowing my twin GTX 1080 cards out of the water depending upon what is being rendered. I wondered if anyone else is seeing this or how large of a scene they are successfully rendering using GPU render and if so what cards are they using.

I'm trying to determine if I've done something wrong in my scene or if I'm right along with what other people have experienced. Just some data points would be very helpful.

That doesn't sound right. Could it be that textures for example are overloading the video memory and not geometry?
Edit: I'm assuming this is about the same scene as the next thread, where Blago already replied that it's the geometry causing it.

There is one texture map file that is 816kb in size and 2048x1024 in resolution. That is the only texture map in the entire scene. You can see from the screenshot below there are only 421k polygon faces in the entire scene. There are 7 lights.Click image for larger version

Yes it is the same scene. Blago is looking into it but I was just trying to debug some more on my own to help and I was curious what size polygon meshes people were rendering in GPU mode on what equipment. As I said, I did not think that under 500K polygons was what I would consider to be a large scene so when it was running out of memory I was quite surprised. I know the geometry that is comprising the most polygons and I could re-topo it but I think I could be masking a larger issue because I find it hard to believe that is the root cause of my problem. I believe my geometry is clean and constructed right but if I've done something wrong I would want to know what it is I did so that I do not do it again in the future.
