  • 4 different errors in one session

In one session tonight I've been getting all of these errors multiple times:

    - Cuda error 700 - requiring a force-quit and restart of Maya
    - Vray Unhandled error exception - requiring a force-quit and restart of Maya
    - Some OptiX error cos I dared try to use RTX, wouldn't even start a render
    - and now I have a VrayMTL that disconnects everything in its shader network if I try to render with motion blur turned on (of course this problem doesn't happen when I switch to Vray CPU)

I'd send a scene but I honestly don't know if there's much point as its clearly not scene dependent, these types of errors start happening with almost any scene that has a moderate amount of complexity in it. It just feels like using beta software, the stability of Vray GPU just isn't there. What's going on guys?

    Windows 10, Maya 2021.1, RTX 3080ti

    Was it stable branch?
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

I get between 5-10 changes when running an IPR before it crashes. Then I get about 4 restarts of the IPR before I get the '"unhandled error exception" after which I have to restart Maya. This is most projects now

tbh yeah i agree, I'm at the point where I find myself expecting it to fail, crash etc when using IPR, which for whatever reason, really isnt what the user experience should be.

Exactly! I'm always anticipating a crash as well and its just a hurdle for creativity. I end up settling for less because otherwise I just have to keep pushing on through crash after crash. I know squintnic has similar experiences. I feel like the stability of the GPU engine has declined since Vray 3. Would be great to hear from someone at Chaos about this.

I find that running chrome and its extensions, like picture in picture - lead vray to weird things. Can you shutdown everything, except the maya itself, even explorer and try it again?

run displays from second card. leave 3080 just for VRay.

Thats not required with redshift. And I'm about 90% sure that these crashes and bugs aren't happening due to rendering with the display card. I had 4 gpus in my previous system, disabling the display card made no difference as to whether I'd get these problems.

not required in VRay either. but GPU feels much more stable for me than for others. radeon + nvidia is my secret sauce prescription for stable VRayGPU. your mileage may vary obviously.

I'm getting something very similar. Load of errors and crashes, mostly when using RTX. I'm on the very latest build of Vray and recommended drivers though I was on the standard Vray 5 update 1.1 for Maya before that and had the same issues. I do have two Ampere GPUs with different memory configs, however. Errors seem to be related to Optix and the building of the kernels for the devices (mainly on the 3080Ti)?

                          Windows 10, Maya 2020.4, RTX 3080ti, RTX A4000

RTX cant be used with a lot of transperant and translucent materials atm. apparently its a 'limitation'
get a license on Redshift, there is a decent converter available, not an ideal work around. Hoping this is fixed when Vray GPU is broken off into its own product and taken out of paid Beta.

are you using FastSSS2 or AlSurfaceMtl for translucency on gpu?
