  • Multi/sub-object freezes computer

    Hi guys,

I was recently working on a scene when VrayRT started to freeze my computer when using Multi/sub-object material on a wooden floor.
The floor is made of separate and distinct planks(unique objects). Basically, when i apply a Multi/sub-object material to it(no matter how many or what type of sub-materials i have), or , the computer freezes and I need to restart from the button. It freezes even when no sub-material is plugged into the Multi/sub-object material.
The floor objects are very simple objects, basically some bevelled boxes.

The error i get is: Driver API error 700
Here's a picture i was able to make with my phone before the computer freezes.

    I have tried to:
    - remove some of the videocards when rendering
    - render through the network from another computer(as master) via distributed rendering using the videocards from the computer I normally work on(the one that freezes)as slave and the slave freezes again.
    - update Nvidia GeForce driver from 337 to 340.52(latest)
    - merge all the floor objects into one single editable poly
    - add new Multi/sub-object material to the floor objects and tried with a sub-object material plugged and also with no material plugged.
...but the error persists and I can't try too many things because the computer needs a restart after each error - everything freezes.

As soon as I remove the Multi/sub-object material, the scene works fine.

    I'm using VrayRT 3.00.07 on Max 2015 sp2 and Windows7 Ultimate sp1 with 4 GTX Titan Blacks.
I have created a support ticket and sent you the scene to support@chaosgroup.com already.

    Regards,
    Peter Istrate.

I have detected the problem which relates to the usage of CG-Source Floor Generator plugin: http://www.cg-source.com/floorgenerator.php
Every time I try to apply a Multi/sub-object material to the geometry created by the Floor Generator, the computer freezes when I try to render (same happens even if I use a simple new scene).
This is happening only when I use GPU.
    With CPU works fine.

This is strange though because all what that plugin does is to create a few pieces of geometry which are some simple boxes in fact.
I have tried to collapse these boxes and to convert them into editable poly, editable mesh, break the elements into distinct objects, and anything else I could.... even create a sphere(convert it to editable poly)and attach the floor geometry to that sphere hoping it will inherit the sphere proprieties, or save the geometry into a different scene and import it into the working scene... but the error is still there. It seems that something is nested into this geometry no matter what I do which is not compatible with VrayRT GPU.

Please let me know if you can replicate this error.
I hope this helps you to find the problem and I hope it will be fixed in the next release.
    Cheers!

    Regards,
    Peter Istrate.

      Hi Peter,

We got the same error here API 700 with your scene. I have isolated only the floor geometry and its mustisub object material and forwarded it to our developers.
Most probably it is a bug and we will fix it.

      Thank you for this report.

As I've said, I have tried to manipulate the geometry in various ways, hoping that I will end up with a geometry with no errors nested in, but nothing worked.
The only thing that worked though, was to export that specific piece of geometry to a different file format(.FBX) and re-import it back into my scene. After the import, it worked fine.

            Hi Peter,

We found and fixed the issue. There was a bug in the multi material part of the code.
Most probably this fix will be part of the next V-Ray 3 service pack.

            Thanks again for your feedback.
