3D Depth of Field and Rendertime - where to tweak?

Hi gang,

i have to render 3d DoF cause i am having a macro cameramove throug grass…DoF is way to big to do it in comp…

My Questions:
1. Are there some general “fast dof” settings?
2. I am using the settings from the renderglobals and i am NOT using a physical camera…
3. Does the “sides” feature slow down rendering?

My current rendertime is 10 hours for FullHD…need to get it to 4-5 hour at least…
My settings:
Adaptive DMC min 1 max 12 Thres. 0.01
     Motion Blur → Aperture 0.11 , center bias 0 , sides checked , Number of sides 5 , Rot 0 , Aniso 0 , subdivs 16
GI is a pre-caclulated Irradiance map of about 180MB … interpolation samples at default 20
     Adaptive Amount 0.85 , Adaptive Threshold 0.01 , min samples 8 , subdivs mult 1

Overall subdivs are kept at default except one or two shader where i set them to 16.

Thx in advance
Oliver!

I usually set my motion blur to subdivs 3 to start with. Usually that works fine. In some rare cases you can might need higher. 16 should give you very unnecessary high render times. The default 6 is usually too high. Unless your rendering a super fast moving camera I don’t think you need 16.

thx…but i was talking about DoF  motionblur will be done in comp…

I also figured out some settings with the help of rusko from chaosgroup. tweaking the SDtree really makes sense sometime…but u have to try settings…unfortunately there is no rule of thumb…but i reduced rendertimes by 20% only by tweaking the sdtree…i also reduced polycount on my instances so that i am now rendering 4 hours per frame instead of 10…
