Reading through some of the posts, I’ve noticed some talk about using different types of models like 3ds in sketchup. Is this possible? I thought you could only use sketchup models like the ones from 3d warehouse.

You can import 3ds files, and CAD files as well. FILE/IMPORT and and choose 3ds as format of the import.
