After seeing a few requests lately for good yacht models, and seeing the kind of quality available on turbosquid, I’ve decided to compile a good quality yacht collection.
Models will be created in quads and triangles so that the mesh quality can be adjusted using mesh-smooth.
All materials will be vray matls.
Any maps will be included.
Models will be based on modern yachts.
Models will be grouped in the following categories-
1) Small yachts 25ft-50ft
2) Medium yachts 50ft-80ft
3) Large yachts 80ft-130ft
4) Super yachts 130ft+
Each group will have 4 sailing yachts and 4 power yachts of different designs.
Haven’t decided on prices yet, but think they should be fairly cheap.
I’ve started on the ‘Medium yacht’ collection first as I think these will probably be the most common size. First up is a 53ft sailer based on a Farr design. It’s still a WIP at the moment so will post some more images as it progresses. The rendered images show it with a ‘nurms’ mesh-smooth value of 2 and the wireframe shows the basic polys.
Excellent proposal. I would buy such a collection. Last time I had to add yachts to a visualization, I could only find crap boats from Turbosquid or the like.
Those were my thoughts too as I looked through their collections. There seemed to be a few which were ‘nearly’ good, but always let down by stuff that wasn’t modelled to real world scale and most were priced quite high IMO.
Thats looking really good. A few things looks slightly off. I say if you go through this trouble of modeling, why not take it even further. Small details could really add to this.
1) The winches are too large for a boat that size.
2) A boat at rest will generally have winch covers.
3) Is that a cover on the boom? One common error I saw with the boat models at rest is that the cover didn’t wrap around the front of the mast.
4) A few guide pulleys running along the deck will help alot.
5) Usually they have furling systems on boats 35’ and up.
6) One more pulley is needed towards the aft bottom of the boom to keep it tense (from swinging and knocking you overboard.)
7) A few holes are needed in the rear for the exhaust (which usually sits near the water line.)
8) I assume you’ll be adding a method of steering
9) It would be beneficial for you to provide one version at rest and another at sail.
Tim - it may take a while to complete the whole collection so you may have to be patient with me!
Jujubee - some good points there.
1) I’ll double check these sizes. They were taken from a 58’ yacht that I did a while back, so don’t think they’ll be too far off.
2) Haven’t ever noticed those! Will look into it.
3) No cover on the boom at the moment. Will also look at that too.
4) Deck gear is on the list of things to do, but I dont want to make these items too detailed in order to save on file size.
5) I’ve got a furler on the forestay, but havent done anything on the boom. Will take a look at this also.
6) This is on my to-do list.
7) Forgot about that. Will add something in.

I have sailed since I was a little kid (spent a lot of time trapped with my parents 3 days a week moving nowhere and nowhere fast) - those winches should be at least half that size.
Ahh, that’s because you’ve got small winches… :lol: 8)
Have done some searching and have found some info on winch covers and sail covers. Some of those sail covers don’t cover the boom and dont wrap around the mast, but the majority do.
I think I get what you mean about the furling now, you want to see the jib furled around the forestay - I’ll see what I can do.
Generally boats smaller than 30" do not have them because if you are buying a boat smaller than 30", you cannot afford it. When boats go above 30", chances are you have money and can afford a more convenient system.
Had a look at those winches too. The bottom diameters were ok, but the tops and the main spindle were too large so have scaled them down to something more reasonable now.
Here’s some pics of the model so far. Just got the covers left to do.
One thing that I think could be a major problem is file format. I’ve got max9 and 1.5rc3, which means that anyone with max8 or below wont be able to open the file. Also, the matls are different from 1.47 to 1.5rc3 so that wont be much good either.
I’ve got a feeling it’s going to be best to supply these in obj format with maps and let you guys mess around with materials. I’m guessing obj’s keep all the mapping co-ords and material sets. I’ll give it a test.
Looking real good. You just need a sail cover and some lines running the deck.
As for formats, you can provide regular 3ds (oh well - you lose some materials), export to obj, and perhaps even to .fbx. All this is better than nothing. Most of the stuff on Turbo is scanline anyways.
