Populate does look great. We played around (briefly) with Project Gelato (or whatever the heck it was called) and it had promise. Never as straightforward as it seems though!
(I seem to recall that the choice of characters/textures was severely limited)
what i’m waiting for is viewport performance as my renderer of choice is allready top quality !
Some of these updates are long over due and should have been implemented years a go, especially the viewport enhancements. They seem to be fixing a lot of their mistakes such as a bloated nitrous viewport, but a good update none the less.
i like that they have finally enabled some kind of camera view pan and zoom capability. Its a pain having to switch to open gl which had the zoom function for years. I’d have to say though except for a one or two items the updates to max and maya are underwhelming.

Then you will like their latest project. Project Pinocchio. This will probably make it into max 2015 or 2016 I’m geussing
Project Pinocchio is for creating various detailed characters

When is 2014 planning to be available? and how long before vray is compatible?
2014 is a binary compatible release. So although many plugins (probably including vray) will need some changes here and there it does work right away basically.

Thorsten
So when is it’s planned release? I have a new project gearing up that is going to need a lot of camera matching. Would love to have the perspective feature in hand by then.
My subscription expires at April 8. Hope to be released it before. ![]()
you get a grace period
Ah? Can I get a new version license during a grace period? Really??
cool, good to know
In 2014, Caddy control UI can be off.
Yes! I never thought it would happen. Posted about that issue in the Autodesk Uservoice forum ages ago. The suggestion got lots of support, but nothing happened - no update for 2012 and 2013 -but amazingly enough they will implement it for 2014! Seems like 3dsmax finally might be moving in the right direction. ![]()
Vlado etc. - Do you have an ETA (even if rough for now) for a roll-out of updated Vray that supports 2014? I’ve heard that most (if not all) plugins compiled for 2013 should work fine in 2014 but it would be great to have an “official” release that we can be confident is stable.
I ask because I’m trying to plan rolling out 2014 here - naturally the whole thing relies on Vray. My intention is to move to 2014 immediately (yeh… a first for me..!!! - apparently some features have been fixed that were crippling for me in 2013) so the sooner I can do that the better.
Cheers,
We will have an official build within a month of the official release of 3ds Max 2014.
With that said, the version for 3ds Max 2013 will work mostly fine; there are also 2014 builds on the nightly builds server.
Best regards,
Vlado
Thanks Vlado - I don’t suppose you know if there are any features that definitely won’t work or will have issues before the updated build? If it’s nothing major then I think I will upgrade and take the risk.
There might be an issue with the V-Ray light lister, but I can’t remember if we fixed it for the 2.40 builds on the site - I will check.
Best regards,
Vlado
Sounds ok to me, if that’s the extent of the issues. Thanks Vlado!
