3ds max crash while rendering in vray 4 beta 2

Hi,

I have this really weird problem. Work on a scene for a while in max 2018 and vray 4 beta 2 and then make a new camera and keep changing scene and adding things from this second camera. After lots of renders and changes I change my active camera to first one I created at the beginning. But from this camera I cant make a render now. After minute or so when still compute the first pass whole max crash.

I can render from second camera without any problem. And now funny part. I save this scene for max 2017 where I have vray 3.6 installed and it renders fine. So where is a problem please? I want to render it in vray next and really dont know what is going on.

I tried to delete this camera and make a new one and position it close to the first one but didnt help.

Here is a dump file:

Thank you.

Are you using auto exposure?

No, every camera has its own setup.

Hello,

This crash dumps seems to be from some nightly build and not from V-Ray Next Beta 2. Can you try to reinstall your V-Ray and render again ? If it still crashes - attach the new crash dump.

Best regards,
Yavor

Hmmm, thats weird. I will try reinstall it and let know. Thank you for answer.

I reinstall newest VRay Next on both computers, but problem is still there.
When I use DR on both computers, max didnt crash, but both DR spawners crash.
When I use standard render on main computer, whole max crash. There are dump files:

Thank you for any help.

Hello,

You have a Shellac material in your scene - it is incompatible. You can run the V-Ray scene convertor and it will change it.

Best regards,
Yavor

Ok, I will fix that and try if it will be fine.

But in vray 3.6 didnt crash and shellac material was still there anyway. Its probably some older model I bought. Hate this bad shaders. I will fix it and see what happen.

Thank you.

So its fine now, shellac cause this. Thank you a lot.

Glad that helped.

Generally we try to support Max materials but in many cases they cause problems or slowdowns so it’s best to avoid them. This is also true for some of the new features in V-Ray Next - that’s why it didn’t crash in 3.6.

By the way - can you send this scene with the Shellac material to our support (or a simplified version of it). There might be things we can do to at least avoid the crash.

It will be best to just print a warning or something so user know what is happening. Crash is the worst case.

Sure, scene is pretty heavy, but I will try to simplify it when it will still going to crash and I will send it to support.

Thank again.

Yes, we will fix the crash - thanks for the report!

Best regards,
Vlado

Scene sent to support.

I simplified it and it didnt crash. So I made some research and found out that it crash because of shellac material only when HDR is used. When I deleted it and use sun/sky instead max didnt crash. So I simplified the scene and leave HDR there.

I had another crash. Dont know why, in IPR only made a crop to render and after a few seconds max crashed. Its the same scene, shellac is not there, so I dont know what is going on again. Sending dumps:

Please can you look at it.

Thank you.

@vlado There is a video how I made this second IPR crash:

Please help, thank you.

This one has something to do with the denoiser but will write back when I have some more info.

You are right, when I remove denoiser its ok.

Anything new about this one please?

The second crash (with the denoiser) should be fixed in Beta 3.

The first one is not yet fixed unfortunately. It’s related to using light select elements with Max materials in the scene.

Ok, denoiser fixed is great for now, thank you.
