3ds Max crashes when rendering animation in Vantage via Live-Link (V-Ray scene).

Hello.
I’m stucked with “little” problem.

I have big open scene (landscape, about 2 sq. km, hills, roads, cars, trees, grass etc.), and i make animated camera and some animated cars. Render it in Vantage, and it was all good, 30+ videos was made.

Then i worked a little bit to improve this scene, adds some regions, some objects and after all these changes (it takes 1-2 months to complete) render starts to crash on a simple states. In “old” scene i could render up to 1 billion polygons, but now it’s about 150 milions… and it’s unstable. I use layers, so i hide all unnessesary objects. Also i kinda check all objects that i usually add in scene.

How it happens. I opened my scene in 3ds Max (V-Ray engine and materials), prepared all areas and objects. Than i start Live-Link to Vantage. It’s opened good in Vantage, i can navigate and look. The movement is comfort and smooth. I can tweak some preferences for better look. Than i go back in 3ds Max and hit “Render animation with Chaos Vantage” - it moves me back to Vantage and asks final settings before render (quality, number of frames, output file etc.). I hit START and usually all good and stable. But now it can render 1 frame and 3ds Max crashes. The same scene and it could render 3 frames and it crashes with “An error has occurred…” window. 5-6 frames maximum. In some very rare cases it could last till 30 frames…

Somehow it’s connected with Chaos Scatter… or not, because without scatter it wold be not much polygons to render. With scatter is on it’s easy may be hundreds millions polygons. BUT it’s not logical that i can open it in Vantage scene with 1 b polygons and could not be able to render it… or i could render only 1-2 frames. And again - with earlier version of the same scene there is no problem. I use scatter fro grass, trees, bushes.

It can render some frames and then, it try to send new information to vantage (i don’t understand why, scatter is not animated) and it could be visible on task manager, it uses video memory of video card, i have peaks and lows on diagram.

Configuration: Windows 11 Pro - 3ds Max 2024, V-Ray 6.2, Vantage 2.8.1
AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 32 Gb of RAM, Nvidia RTX 4060 (8 GB vram)

What I tried and it’s not worked:
1. Turned off “backface cull” in all objects in scene (heard that it’s good for scatter)
2. Reset V-Ray and Vantage settings
3. Turned off all displacement in V-Ray GPU settings in 3ds Max
4. Tries to find “problem” object in Scatter and appears it doesn’t exist
5. Turned off “Temporal consistency” in chaos scatter settings
6. Turned off “Auto update” in scatters
7. Also tries to find something in 3ds Max, V-Ray and Vantage logs… but failed

Would be glad for any suggestions)

Don’t *render* via live link, use vrscene instead (closing Max would also help). Also it’s a good idea to update bios and drivers.
BTW some people say FP is more stable than chaos scatter.
P.S. realistically 8gb of vram might be to limiting for your tasks

Thanks, but is it possible to render animation that i created in 3ds Max, in exported scene? I can’t find how… I only see high quality render for still image. And i can’t play animation in vantage (animation from 3ds max)…
It’s a problem with Forest Pack - i don’t have it and can’t afford it. Maybe it’s more stable than chaos sca

The issue finally resolved! As a permanent solution it’s gonna be export scene with animation and render in vantage, which works good, but takes more time because of big file created and 100-300 frames top (my scenes often have 1000+ frames).
But true solution is upgrade Scatter core up to version 7. I got version 4 and it have some bugs. I install V-Ray 7.2.0 (which have Scatter 7 inside) and it works like a charm!
