3dsmax Normal Bump Map gone when vray active

Hey folk. So I just noticed if you have vray set as your renderer, the max “Normal Bump” map is gone from the available list of maps. Of course I can always use the vray normal bump map which apparently is more compatible with various vray object types in the manual, but I just wanted to check that the regular max Normal Bump map is still fully compatible on regular geometry when rendered in vray?

HI, thanks for posting. What version of V-Ray and 3ds Max are you suing? Why would you want to use Normal Bump? Have you tried VRayNormalBump and why not use it instead?

The regular Normal Bump map should be avoided as much as possible - it causes issues ranging from slowing down the rendering to crashes.

Vladimir: max 2022, vray 6. I’m doing a lot of importing and exporting of fbx files between apps, and the fbx format knows nothing of vray so it’s creating a lot of Normal Bump maps on import, and needs Normal Bump on export.

Yavor: Ick, that sucks. Guess I’ll have to convert them to vraynormalbump when rendering in vray, then convert them back to export.

It is not, V-Ray even prints a warning about this. The standard 3dsMax normal map is known to cause considerable delays when working with IPR.

Thanks for the info Oliver! Wish that fbx understood vray maps

Yeah, that would be fantastic. Would make our lives so much easier!
