Ok…The two tries have failed for the card working in the Dell P690. We are having issues finding a power supply that has all the connectors plus two 6 pin PCIe wires AND the 20 pin power adapter PLUS the 24 pin adapter. Any suggestions are helpful
Well it shouldnt be that hard at all. I have a thermalright 680w. But almost any thermalright/antec/enermax over 500w should be enough. Depends what your running tho.
I will be buying a new one soon as with all my HDD’s plugged in and in the middle of an intense game often the computer will just turn off.
Yeah…But with a Dual Quad Core system…you need that EXTRA 20 pin connector…Cant seem to find one…And my IT guy just called me to tell me that the motherboard is blown…DOH

Check out the high end antec and enermax PSU’s most of them are Quad core cpu “certified” haha what ever that means.
sorry to jump in on this. my dual xeon on a supermicro server board has a trupower antek 550w power supply, and everytime i try to stick in a firewire card it doesnt want to boot. ive tried both slots with the same result so im not sure its an irq problem. do you think my power suply isnt strong enough or something?
Hmmmm..That’s weird…But I didn’t think the fireware cards pulled THAT much power… Could be the irq thingy…

I doubt its a power problem. Firewire cards are not very powerhungry devices.
Easy way to test, just unplug all dvd drives and say all HDD’s and see if it boots.
Well…It seems like the 8800 is the best card for the buck…BUT…my IT guys are a little waery on trying other power supplies at this point. Cause the board is friend now…Of course Dell will be here tomorrow to give us a new power and motherboard…But then we are back to square one again. XFX said I could just plug ONE 6 pin in…BUT I would not be getting the performance…But the other option we have is to get adapters for the 4 pin connectors to 6 pin connectors and then hook that up…But the voltage difference is what we were worried about. It seems very odd that plugging in a new power supply would fry the board…But they could have been DOA to begin with.
im running an M-Audio 4/10 audio card with built in pre-amp for condencer mics off of the firewire card 6pin rather than 4pin
Extra 20 pin connector?!? That doesn’t sound right. Most Connectors now are 20+4 connectors to the main - you can plug the 24 into a 20 slot - the 4 should overlap - or just go with the 24pin to 24 pin. The board perhaps gives you the ‘option’ between the two - better look up that motherboard manual. But having to connect two mains to one board - I’m not aware of that. Perhaps someone else that’s built a dual-quad can chime in on this by looking inside their case.

Just double-checked - even Thermaltake’s beafiest PSU doesn’t have an additional 20 pin connector. No offense, but it doesn’t sound like your tech guy knows what he’s doing.
Hmmm..THen perhaps the Dell guy told us wrong…But when we opened the case, BOTH plugs were plugged in. The 20 pin goes to the Quad Cores themselves…Or so the Dell guy says. That’s the only reason we plugged both in…HmmmmmSo confused…

any psu worth its salt will have atleast 2 of those 6 pin connector so enough for 1 8800gtx. and alot of the newer psus have 4,
when you got the pc from dell i assume it was working fine with both powers plugged in?
in your pic with the dell psu the 20 pin doesnt look like a normal 20pin power plug as it should have the sam colored wires as the 24 just 4 kerr wires. that is a little odd. dell proprietry crap strikes again???

Of course if I had ordered the 1000PSU from Dell to begin with…It would have had the other connectors…DOH…
Yeah…It was working fine…But the FIRST PS we ordered…smoked a little and smelled like burnt chicken and rubber…And then the second did nothing…Weird…

I think it is in the Giggaawwaatt range…hehe…Hmm..I know that for all the CAD stations we get 400w. But foor this beast…I was thinking I need 750. But I also “needed” new speakers and subwoofer…For clients of course
You can still get away with a 550 watt with one GPU (perhaps even SLI configuration), a single processor, and 4 hard drives - but getting into the dual PCI Xpress cards and dual quad processors - the power supply needs to be upped above that.
As for that PSU - I think Daforce is right - proprietary crap.
I know this is not helping at all,…at least for the immediate problem. But, is your IT guy full time? If he is then maybe in the future he can build and repair all your systems. If he is worth the money you won’t need on site tech support from Dell or any other company.
We don’t have a full time IT guy. I wish we did.
Anyways, I haven’t seen the extra 20 pin connector either, until now. All the intels I have seen are using the 24 + 8 pin connections. Maybe Dell has worked out a proprietary motherboard/power supply that will only allow them to do the upgrades and replacements.
My 8800 is running at half the power because I didn’t have all the connectors either… it seems to be fine, but perhaps somewhat slower than the optimal.
