Pursuing of ability to choose the best workflow for different heavy tasks and situations of our Workflow. I would strongly recommend giving us the ability to change the output of 32-bit EXR like Single-Layerd EXR with different compression - especially DWAA
I imagine that this option could be implemented via VrayOptionRE render element, where we have all other bunch of settings for the EXR output.
Since this DWAA compression is not presented in the 3DS MAX output, I want to encourage you to implement those options for Single Layered EXR with DWAA compression handling it via VRay features.
I cannot see that this is a completely new feature for Vray, as you already have that option in your stand-alone tool .vrimg to .exr.
Are there any options to implement it via OptionRE or somehow?

Hi. Single Layered EXR are exported through the Max exporter. It is up to Autodesk to add it to their library of compressions. We do use their exporter. Please request this on their platform. We do provide DWAA from our exporter through V-Ray RAW image file exporter in combination with VRayOption RE.
If you would like V-Ray to export single-channel EXR with DWAA, this means that we need to write our own exporter, which includes not only single-channel EXR but other formats as well. And this creates a completely different task. So I would strongly recommend addressing this idea to Autodesk.
Thank you.

Hi,
Thank you for your response. However, our team is already well-versed in Autodesk’s approach to these tasks, and unfortunately, they seem outdated. We’ve been actively seeking a solution, and this request has been raised multiple times with Autodesk and V-Ray, though without feedback— aside from this response, which we appreciate.
We want to encourage you to support us in implementing this feature. It’s been over 10+ years, and we’re still waiting for 3ds Max to include DWAA compression in their export options. We understand that V-Ray uses the same exporter, yet you’ve managed to integrate additional EXR settings via OpenRE.
To clarify:
3ds Max offers an option for single-layer EXR, but lacks DWAA/B compression.
V-Ray’s OpenRE provides DWAA compression, but without single-layer support.
Doesn’t this seem inconsistent, given that V-Ray exporter uses the same 3ds Max exporter?
How significant would it be to implement the same feature for single-layer exports?
It feels as though there’s a reluctance to explore this feature, which is crucial from our perspective.
Could you explain this further or let us know if there’s a way forward?
I really would appreciate your additional input on this matter.
KInd Regards,

Would it work for you if we added an option to use the V-Ray OpenEXR saving code (the same that we use for example with the vimg2exr tool) instead of the 3ds Max saving code? In that case, the VRayOptionRE settings will apply as they do for the multi-layer saving.

Dear Vlado,
Thank you for joining here with this suggestion.
We would love to have all of these options currently available in your tool (vrimg2exr) implemented directly into the VrayOptionRE render element. This would help us skip the additional step and time-consuming conversion process when single-layer EXR files are necessary to switch easily in certain workflows and post-prod processes.
My request aims to integrate the following functionalities into VrayOptionRE, if possible:
-
Support output settings as multi-layer and single-layer EXR.
-
DWAA/B compression options for both versions (single-layer and multi-layer).
-
The ability to organize single-layer EXR files into subfolders.
-
Save the Cryptomatte as a single + metadata file, especially when it was saved in the original multi-layer format.
If this request is too great and impossible, the new feature in the last update of a separating Cryptomate file will be used permanently.
Thank you for considering this request.
