I could use some advise on irradiance-settings, as you can see I’m doing not so well. It’s my first use of Vray for an interior-animation. The scene is rather complex, about 1,5 million polygons, lots of bump-maps, a skylight and some light-fixtures. Do I need skyportals? Are the colored dots the ones that can be prevented by using ‘apply crop’ on the bitmaps?
I used the Medium-animation preset for the irradiance map and QMC-GI as secondary bounces. Irradiance calculation took about 30 hours, one frame only. Antialiasing: adaptive QMC, min 1, max 4. QMC-sampler: default.
I need to make an animation of this scene, I’ve tried a few different approaches to global illumination, but can’t see to come up with an effecient and good-looking one. Can anyone give me some pointers as in what direction to look for a solution?
Guess you’re right, they are almost all Architectural Materials. Although only a few reflective ones. The client first wanted just a few pictures, so since I’m thouroughly familiar with radiosity I created all materials for that purpose.
Now the client also wants animation, depending on the costs ofcourse, so I’m trying to figure out if this will be possible, and how much time this will take with Vray. The scene constists of approximately 300 different materials so I couldn’t rewrite them to Standard in a short time and without budget. I’ll try rewriting just the reflective ones.
I also have a lot of overbright warnings, which will possibly also be the result of using Arch.Mat. And that can also be the source of the spots ofcourse…
If those are RPC people you may want to search the forum on the best way to approach this…
for me in the past Ive found they seem to slow rendertimes and come out brighter than with scanline and not look right (too bright?). Some people render the RPC stuff out seperatly using scanline. Maybee someone can confirm this, but it should help rendertimes a fair bit
I found out that 0,5 mil polys were used by the curled beams in the dome and the slanted glass, I excluded them from GI to see if there’s a speed-increase in irr-map calc. With settings on ‘very low’ irr-map takes about 2 hours now, after that rendering in minutes. But ofcourse then the irr-map isn’t very sophisticated (-4 -3). The -2 pass takes ages.
What happened with the setup of the image? You can safely use first Medium preset for the irradiance map just to see how long does it take and then switch to Animation. QMC as secondary bounce greatly slows down the calculation of GI especially if you put subdivs 50. Your antialiasing settings are ok. Looks like the only problem here are the materials and the lighting. Did you manage to convert the materials to VrayMtl? The ones that have Raytrace on them have to be changed for sure! Raytrace is highly unrecommended with Vray. Also, the materials that have any form of reflection on them should be changed to VRay materials and further tweaked. What kind of lighting do you use for this scene - maybe we can optimize it further? You can post a wire here so we can see or you can email me.
