Well…I had a client that INSISTED we use Sketchup…They have someone that loves the program, but frankly to draw the whole thing to scale in SU would have taken a while…Plus I havent even used it hardly. So…I added the toon filter thingy…and just a couple of colors…Only had half a day, so we didnt have time to do anything fancy…But I did use the Sun, etc.
One thing…I noticed…I start adding materials and they are all really bright…I had the sun the way I wanted it, but then I had to dumb it down a notch. Is there a trick to the materials? And most of them I had downloaded from vray materials. Well..Hopefully I can take this to the next level soon.
as someone who has stayed in a few military dorms… I agree, those are definitely military style dorms. And what kind of client demands you use some particular program? Thats like putting an ‘Im ignorant’ sign on their back.
People in my office insist on using SketchUp and I actually miss out on projects because I don’t use it and refuse to use it. It is one of the most frustrating things ever, knowing I can give them something better and they still think SketchUp is the best thing ever.
Actually one of the people here models everything in Max and then brings them into SketchUp because that is the final look the designers wants.
I’ve started to use the toon thing as well and it helps make the image look a little more sketchy. I haven’t experimented to much with materials and toon filter.
Yea…I got first pick in Fantasy and of course I picked him up…I only wish the other bums I picked up did so well…Chris Cooley is my tight end and that was a good pick…but other than that…damn…

checked the DETAIL ENHANCEMENT button…But it does look a lot better and without it…Still…a work in progress
I use Sketchup a lot…modeling in scale is the way to do it and it’ a very easy tool…I don’t thing that it’s a problem if you practice a little more with it.
In my experience modeling in SU is much faster than modeling in MAX/VIZ.
Yes, but between more restrictive building codes than anywhere else in the world, narrow minded clients, and attempts to fit in with “local design”, there usually it usually doesn’t happen.
That and it’s all about the money. Stuff like this or “mediterranean style” are cheap to build because it’s what the volume materials suppliers make available, because everyone is building in that style. For example, red clay tile roofs are the cheapest thing available in Southern California (that isn’t illegal) because everyone uses it, so there’s bulk savings. Everyone uses it because it’s the cheapest.
And for some reason, the general population in America is afraid of “Modern” design. Even Ikea has cut back a lot of the clean Scandinavian designs in favor of ugly crap that is more “friendly” in the US market.
surely leaving off some of the neo classical detailing would save money! a few less pieces of lovely polystyrene would be better for the envirnment too!
Yeah, but then the building is blank and ugly (in the developer’s mind…). Granted, the building was already ugly to begin with. Polystyrene trimwork is the cheapest way to make a building look more upscale. In the 70s ugly buildings all had wood blocks and ugly black lanterns stuck on it, inspired by Modernism + Tudor architecture.. In the 80s it was bright colored geometric shapes. The 90s had green and white lattice and pickets inspired by Cape Cod homes. Now everyone’s doing crappy classical appliqué. It’s all just a matter of styling cheap ugly buildings to make them look slightly less cheap and ugly.
The american code is far to be the most restrictive…actually it’s very flexible in my opinion!!!..the real problem is the Developers, they don’t want to do something different because for them is “Risky”…they think if you add fake moldings, fake windows, parapets, a lot brick in different colors to a box you have a building with character…In los Angeles there are very succesful projects because the wheather helps a lot and a bunch of Architects-Developers.
It all comes down to what gentleman…Money…Most developers want to cram as many buildings on a parcel as they can…More buildings,More money…When these guys are building these dorms…They are gonna build 10-20-30…who knows…This is a concept for the local ait force base, but the design process comes out of Scott’s Air Force Base. That is where ALL decisions are made for ALL the Air Force Bases. Like with this one…I put reveals, cutouts, etc…in the building cause I dig the new Detail that vray can pick up now…But NONE of that will even make the board… Now it is great when that client comes along and wants something SNAZZY…But around here…not that often
we have the same problem here Jack and I also think it is driven by developers and the fact that everything is becoming purely more and more sales driven. Most sales at the least cost. At least we have some decent buildings going up for the government these days which I thank the introduction of the GST for because they all have so much money that they cant find enough projects to waste it on!
As an architecture graduate as well, I also think stickon elements are repulsive! (as we are all taught). I also do a lot of project home crap which all has to be painted various hues of brown… maybe in 2010 everything will be painted purple?. The people that make these decisions seem to miss the point that it doesnt have to be painted at all.
My point is that its as bad in aussie now as well. Actually I think we have a big problem where everyone thinks they are a master of modern contemporary design so there are a zillion cloned rippoff buildings with exactly the same elements that they all photocopied from the same magazine but reproduced in a very similar way to how the neoclassical stuff has been glued on. Its not just architecture though, its furniture, clothing, music and even seen in the way people all seem to talk in exactly the same way without any individual thought. The way I see it things are getting worse and worse and no doubt everywhere will ‘evolve’ to the new level of shit design that america has reached. Forgot what we were talking about now lol /rant

i think everyone needs to do an architectural taste course at high school to show people other types of architecture, sure these polystyrene mc mansions might be cheap to build but you could build something modern for the same or even cheaper still! There I go thinking like a modernist again… leave the old architecture for the past lets do something different for a change. end of my rant. for now.
thank goodness some architects here are more modern however due to the materials at hand they cant be toooo modern. but alas. i need to put arch viz out o fmy mind. thank goodness. that industry doesnt pay well down here
