Its cool that you can use a texture on vray dome lights but it would be great if this ability were added to the plane and point lights as well.

i second the idea to map vray planes. It would make doing soft box type lighting a breeze
exactly
you could use the VrayLightMaterial applied to a plane?
You can put HDR’s in the material slot…like a HDR of a softbox.
you can yes, but the shadow quality isnt controllable light a vray light is
it’s not the same no, but if you pop a vraylight set to portal infront of it, it helps vray work out where more rays should be sent (or cast from / towards)
from daforce:
Vlado is currently coding proper mesh based vraylights.
So you can select any object and turn it into a vraylight. So it will be a direct light like the current vraylights and not a GI based light like the vraylightmtl.
and the thread:

and some nice examples of a plane with a softbox Hdr mapped on from Buck of sway:

I’m looking for solutions that don’t involve gi.

VrayLightMaterial with a HDR does necessarily have to use GI.
In bucks mustang thread, he says he’s rendered it without GI.
from what I gathered from the Buck thread, he is using the vraylightmaterial with hdr’s as a source for highlights not diffuse illumination.
I really just want to do what you can do with the dome light applied to the other light types.
